KALASH People



he Kalash people are a small indigenous ethnic and religious group living in the remote Kalash Valleys, in northern Pakistan.

They are one of the smallest ethnic minorities in the region (only a few thousand people). Known for their distinct culture, language, and religion, very different from surrounding populations. They speak the Kalasha language, part of the Indo-Aryan family.

Religion & Beliefs

The Kalash follow an ancient polytheistic religion. Worship multiple gods tied to nature, mountains, and seasons. They are one of the last non-Islamic indigenous groups in the region.

Festivals

Kalash culture is especially famous for vibrant seasonal festivals:
Chilam Joshi – celebrates spring and fertility
Uchal – thanksgiving for crops
Choimus – the most important, marking the new year
These involve music, dancing, rituals, and colorful dress.

Culture & Lifestyle

Women wear black robes with bright embroidery and elaborate headdresses
Strong tradition of music, dance, and oral storytelling
Society is relatively more gender-mixed and socially open compared to nearby areas
