Rural Markets of Bangladesh

Rural markets in Bangladesh are traditionally known as Haat-Bazaars and they form the backbone of the country's rural economy.

Periodic "Haats" are not just commercial venues but vital social spaces. Historically, they serve as a gathering point for local news, cultural exchanges, and communal gossip centered around tea stalls.

The vast majority of items traded are agricultural, including paddy, fresh vegetables, jute, poultry, and local fish. However, consumer goods (FMCG), cosmetics, and apparel have rapidly penetrated these spaces. Supply chains often rely heavily on traditional intermediaries (Farias and Beparis), which sometimes minimizes direct profits for smallholder farmers.
